Teachers will leave the Learning Ethi{CS} Workshop with a lesson they design or adapt for a current course, along with pedagogical strategies for supporting and deepening ethical exploration in their classes.

We invite teachers to enroll in a one-day online workshop to be conducted on August 17, 2022. Participants in the workshop may continue developing their craft of teaching ethics during the 2022–2023 academic year through a certificate program offered over five additional sessions.

The workshop is designed for teachers who wish to include ethics in their curriculum and who want support in learning how to do so. While the focus will be on high school computer science education, the methods introduced may be readily applied to other technical subjects or for students at other levels.

During the Learning Ethi{CS} Workshop, teachers will:

• recognize opportunities for integrating ethical inquiry in their existing curriculum
• redesign a lesson/assignment so that it incorporates ethical thinking
• explore approaches to teaching ethics, and strategies for encouraging ethical inquiry in the classroom

The workshop will be led by Andover ethicist Kiran Bhardwaj and Andover computer science instructor Nicholas Zufelt. Kiran and Nick have been developing a pedagogy for ethics in computer science with their own students at Phillips Academy. They share methods with fellow educators nationwide with the support of the Tang Institute at Andover.

9:00 – 11:00am EDT — How do I meaningfully integrate ethics into the computer science classroom? Learn strategies and investigate demo lessons.

1:00 – 3:00pm EDT — Putting it into practice with a “curriculum hackathon”: bring an established lesson or assignment from your curriculum to iterate on using the techniques learned in the morning session.
