Upcoming Events: Opportunities to Explore the Science of Learning

In the final weeks of the spring term, the Tang Institute will host four discussion-based forums centered on exciting questions related to the science of learning. Please stop by if you can join us at one of the following events!

David Yeager on Student Persistence, Belonging May 15

A working session and dinner with David Yeager, a leading expert in the ways mindset, purpose, self efficacy, and sense of belonging impact student persistence and achievement, will take place in Pearson C on May 15, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. Yeager will then give a presentation during Faculty Meeting from 7 to 8 p.m. in Kemper Auditorium. His discussions will focus on how students’ beliefs about their belonging and potential can increase their college persistence and reduce institutional achievement gaps. All community members are welcome to join the dinner; the Faculty Meeting presentation, hosted by the Faculty Advisory Committee, is also open to local educators. A reception will conclude the evening in the Underwood Room.

Kevin Mattingly, PhD, on the Science of Learning May 19

Kevin Mattingly, PhD, director of co-curriculum for the Riverdale School in New York City, will join us in Pearson C on Friday, May 19, from noon to 1 p.m., for lunch and conversation. Mattingly has been a science teacher, administrator, and athletic coach for 35 years in junior high and high schools and has consulted and worked with more than 30 schools in the areas of curriculum design, teaching strategies and professional development programs. He co-teaches the popular edX course, “The Science of Learning: What Every Teacher Should Know..”

Patricia Russell, Mastery Transcript Consortium, May 22

The Interim Executive Director of Mastery Transcript Consortium (MTC) will offer a brief overview of the consortium over dinner in Pearson C at 5:30 p.m., prior to Faculty Meeting. Phillips Academy joined the MTC as a member school–a two-year, initial commitment to support the exploration and design of an alternative transcript. Once the Mastery Transcript is built and field tested with a group of volunteer pilot schools and colleges, then PA and other member schools can consider if/when they may wish to explore use in their schools. MTC was recently awarded a $2 million matching grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation.

“Rebooting the American High School with Neuroscience and Purpose Learning” May 24

The Tang Institute will also host the webinar, “Rebooting the American High School with Neuroscience and Purpose Learning,” presented by Stanford Social Innovation Review, on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, from 2 to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The webinar will explore:

• What does the future of high school look like in the next 10, 20, and 30 years? Where are the trends pointing?

• How can the growth of neuroscience help us develop better learning systems and strategies for our students?

• What is the future of product- and project-based learning, and how does this fit into new models of innovative high schools around the country?

• How do all these trends look in light of the new administration in Washington?
